So, this post is going to be a little different. Typically, my posts have been about my thoughts on various topics. However, this one is different because it’s an update about something that will impact my online business: upgrading my computer equipment for video editing and protecting all my important data.
I’ve made a plan: to get a functional PC that will allow me to edit anything without issues and to protect my files by storing them on a reliable computer that won’t suddenly stop working one day (a little foreshadowing there).
Here are the two main reasons behind my decision:
- The laptop I’m currently using is, frankly, a potato when it comes to my needs. GIMP, my image editor, works fine until I try something “crazy” like effects or distortions. Video editing is completely out of the question—the laptop overheats, lags, and makes smooth editing impossible, damaging the components in the process.
- A few years ago, I had an unfortunate experience when my previous laptop failed due to a critical component malfunction. I had that laptop for about four years, and my current one is already showing signs of a similar imminent disaster.
Since I’m serious about this and have the time and energy, I decided to buy each PC component individually and build a custom PC tailored to my needs. One week ago, when I made this decision, I knew absolutely nothing about PC parts—not even the basics.
To learn, I spent the last few days watching an endless number of videos about PC building: which parts to choose, why some components are better than others, compatibility issues, and countless other questions like “why this, why that, what is this, what is that.” How did I learn all of this in less than five days? Simple: sheer desperation to avoid dragging this process out for a month. It was full focus—learn fast but learn well, doing nothing else besides attending to my basic needs.
The list of components is finally ready. With all the relevant information I’ve gathered, I’m 100% confident in my choices. As of writing this article on Thursday at 3 p.m., I’m out hunting for parts. This project isn’t cheap—components like the CPU, GPU, and the combined value of all parts add up. However, it’s a great opportunity to gain experience in sourcing—getting the best value for each component. The market is big, with parts available at various prices online, so it’s up to me to find the best deals and avoid overpaying. Even if I have the budget, I’d rather hunt for the best deals and put the saved money in my pocket for other expenses.
What about you? Have you ever faced a situation where your device (like a laptop, PC, or tablet) suddenly stopped working? Were you able to recover your data? And have you experienced times when your device’s capabilities weren’t enough for what you wanted to do online? Share your thoughts in the comments, and have a great start of the weekend!
